![]() Every child promises that they will maintain their youthful carefree spirits into adulthood, but they are almost always wrong. The time loop of Little Nightmares is because it's the time loop of a child entering adulthood. Our ego tricks us into thinking everyone is watching us, that everyone cares about what we're doing, that we're the center of everything. This is because when we're children, it feels like the world revolves around them, instead of the reality that we're just another person of billions in the world. The world seems to be almost bending around Mono. Many of them wear masks because adults wear metaphorical masks in real life to hide their true selves in order to conform to society. Who would rather sit inside and gorge themselves than take in the sights and beauty of the world of which they travel. People stand in uncomfortable, crammed lines to board a ship - with its buffets lined with fat, sedentary people who enjoy the food more than the experience itself. More money, more cars, more food, more comfort. Parents often become gluttons, endlessly consuming to fulfil an insatiable hunger for more. The fat adults going to the Maw are what children watch their parents do in real life. The nomes are the children who get influenced by their narcissistic mothers and also quickly lose their own individuality - they become gray, depressed, soulless, broken workers doing chores, often at the expense of their childhoods. She cannot look into a mirror because then she would be forced to see and accept what she has become. Just like so many mothers desire children, but then decry and ignore them after having them. The lady is a mother-figure who constantly produces (like a real mother births) children (the toy children), but then only focuses on herself and her own image - but turns into a monster when the children disturb her personal activities. The Viewers are what children see adults become as they have their lives and individuality sucked out of them by televisions and entertainment and screens. Her neck is long because she is a metaphor for how adults supervise and discipline and often over-control their children. The adults are literal droning monsters to the children because that's what adults often become in real life - working drones that endlessly consume and punish and let their work and professions become their entire personality. A great hall to a child will look like a small corridor to an adult. It's an effect adults experience all the time - places from their childhood often look physically smaller once they grow older. The child characters are so grossly small compared to objects in the world because in childhood the world looks larger-than-life.
